How to check a car for liens and fines

Before buying a used car, confirm that its registry status and debts match what the seller has disclosed.

1. Check the National Registry

Search by license plate through the Registro Nacional digital services. Verify the owner, make, model, year, engine number and any lien or annotation.

2. Check fines and marchamo

Use official COSEVI channels for pending traffic fines and the INS for marchamo status. Outstanding debt can affect the cost and timing of the transfer.

3. Compare the documents

• The seller must match the registered owner.
• The plate, VIN and engine number must match the vehicle.
• Ask for receipts when the seller says a debt was recently paid.
