What is the marchamo in Costa Rica
The marchamo is the annual circulation fee every registered vehicle must pay to drive legally. It is paid to the INS (National Insurance Institute), usually between November and December 31 each year.
What the marchamo includes
- Property tax (IPV) — progressive tax on the fiscal value (valor fiscal) set by the Ministry of Finance.
- SOA — mandatory auto insurance (minimum accident coverage).
- COSEVI, Red Cross, Firefighters, Education stamp — fixed or proportional fees.
- Pending traffic fines — the INS may add unpaid tickets to your total.
Key dates for 2026
- November 1 — payment period opens for the next year.
- December 31 — last day to pay without late surcharges.
- From January onward, interest and fines apply; driving without payment is illegal.
Electric and hybrid vehicles
In 2026, many electric and hybrid vehicles receive a partial discount on IPV only (not on SOA or other fees). The exact percentage depends on the vehicle year under current law.

FAQ
What happens if I don't pay?
You cannot drive legally. Traffic police may confiscate plates and issue fines. Late payment accrues surcharges.
Can I pay marchamo for a car I'm buying?
Yes, but check fines and liens before transfer. Debts may follow the vehicle to the new owner.
